What are the Seven Roles?

These are the first & most common questions people ask when hearing about the roles, especially after they take the scale.  The insights are immediately available and usable if you are open to change.
The roles offer both the opportunity to celebrate individual strengths but also a simple means to identify the role you might be needing right now.

What is a role?

A role is a choice you make to behave, act, think and even feel a certain way.  Roles are how we face challenges, goals and even everyday life.  We choose how we role.

What are the Seven Roles?

The Seven Roles are the collective set of roles  when combined achieve any goal.  Not all goals need all Seven Roles but the big ones do.  The good news is that roles are learnable.  Ideally, you would play all seven and know when the right role is the best choice.

Here is a snapshot description of each of the Seven Roles:

  • Prophet: The visionary who sees the future and inspires others to follow.
  • Organizer: The logistical wizard who can take any project and break it down into actionable steps.
  • Luminary: The creative force who can see possibilities where others see obstacles.
  • Implementor: The one who gets things done and makes sure the plans are executed flawlessly.
  • Team Builder: The relationship guru who can bring together people from diverse backgrounds and build a cohesive team.
  • Investor: The risk taker who sees potential where others see only uncertainty.Conceptualizer: The big-picture thinker who can connect the dots and validate solutions.

Is this a personality test?

No.  Not at all. Your Seven Roles Roleset (your unique role pattern) reflects your current approach to the tasks you are facing.  Some roles are easier for you to play so you might play them more often.  Some roles are more challenging so you might avoid playing them.  But all the roles can be individually mastered.

Where did the scale come from?

The Seven Team Roles Scale (STRS) was developed over years of research. It began as a assessment tool for organizations to identify obstructions to goal completion. For significant goals, all Seven Roles are needed. A scale was developed to identify the needed individual contributions to teams and the team contributions to goals. The missing roles identify areas of focus for training or hiring or repositioning.  During work from home period, the Seven Roles was used to promote team collaboration, engagement, and onboarding.

The STRS has been refined through thousands of participants in diverse settings. The results continue to be used for further research on role specificities including areas like leadership, burnout, advertising & relationships to name just a few.

Who has used this scale?

For two years we have delivered customized courses to companies like Google, Amazon, Slack and Meta and many more.

The question you might have is what did all these companies use the scale for? The answer is all kinds of reasons. For example, the Seven Roles have been used to offer:
  • A keynote for a company retreat using the scale results to underscore corporate goals, direction or atmosphere
  • Onboarding new hires to company culture
  • Leadership training to both underscore & develop leadership styles
  • Team cohesion and community building
  • Hiring with a focus on task or team atmosphere
  • Conflict & Communication Styles
  • Team Role Growth
